Tonight, I want to look at the opposite side of my post last night, and focus on ways to show love to someone coping with depression. It can be hard to show someone who struggles with a mental illness that you love them. The extreme mood swings, ups and downs, and overall way they push you away from them during their time of need can be frustrating for the person trying to show they care.
1) Listen- Offer to listen to the person who is struggling with a mental illness and when you are with them, actually listen to what they are saying. While it can be hard with the world we live in, try to tune out other distractions. Turn off the television and your cell phone and be 100% attentive to the person.
2) Try to get them outdoors- On my darkest days, I can barely get myself motivated to get out of bed. The benefits of getting outside are numerous for most everyone, but especially crucial for someone who is coping with depression. Being in the sun can help increase Vitamin D production which may help the signs of depression. Go for a short walk or even just sit in a park.
3) Help with housework- The extreme fatigue I have experienced has made it nearly impossible to do even normal, everyday tasks. Helping with simple responsibilities around the house such as folding a load of laundry can help to take some of the stress away from their environment especially when the person is struggling with a disease, and is already feeling down and frustrated with herself for not being able to accomplish what they are accustomed to fulfilling.
4) Bring them fresh fruits and vegetables- Over the last several months, I have had next to no appetite and at times have to remind myself that my body needs nourishment. When I do feel like eating, it is more convenient for me to grab something prepackaged or from a fast food location. Bringing fresh fruits and vegetables is a great way to have the person you love have a wider variety of healthy alternatives to snack on while giving their body some needed vitamins!
5) Help them to laugh- Laughing helps to release feel good endorphins in the body and can be great for someone dealing with depression or anxiety. Offer to bring over some funny movies, crack a joke, or even offering to play a game with them can help them laugh.
6) Remind them that they are loved- Individuals dealing with a mental illness are sometimes extremely hard on themselves, and while it may seem that love is unconditional, it may be easy for them to feel as if no one could possibly love them because of the situations they are facing. Tell your friend/family member/partner why you love them and reassure them that you are there for them during their time of need.
7) Spend some quality time with yourself- Caring for someone who is coping with a mental illness can be hard on all parties involved. While it is important to show support for a personal coping, it is also important to take time for yourself to recharge as well. This will help you be an even better support system.
Overall, there are many wonderful ways to help someone challenged with a mental illness to feel loved and to show your support for them during trying times.
